The chinese name for compass is Zhi Nan Zhen, which mean Pointing South Needle? Floor plan should be good enough. moreover, do note that some compass are magnetized rather than a pure magnet stone and after sometime they can become de-magnetized and give wrong reading.
References :
go inside the house, facing the door, hold your compass/ luo pan against the side of the door (inner side). it is preferred to use a luo pan or a chinese compass, as this is a large square with a round compass at the middle. and it has level things, which indicates if your compass is level to the ground. then position the compass (center of the luo pan) to make the needle align to north/ south. then whatever is perpendicular to the door is your facing direction. this should be the same as in the maps - that is if you are doing it correctly. this is true whether you are in the northern or southern hemisphere.
References :
While I can't tell without looking at your compass, I could suggest one possibility. The Chinese tend to orient their stuff with South. Soooo... if it's made for chinese peolpe, the point may actually be for the south end, and you don't know it. Just a thought. Either way, you can use any compass you have handy for feng shui work.
