Singapore Flyer, the world’s largest Ferris wheel, breaks down trapping more than 100 people. The cause of the halt was due to a motor malfunction. Here’s more on the story.
More than 100 passengers were stranded for six hours on the world’s largest Ferris wheel, the Singapore Flyer, after the attraction ground to a halt because of a power cut to the motor.

Some passengers were lowered from the pods and some were given medical treatment.

The Singapore Flyer stopped working after a short circuit in one of the wheel’s motor drivers cut its power supply, a company spokeswoman said.

[Meta Hargono,Tourist]
“Nervous, everybody was nervous, angry, for the first two hours, they all angry, we all angry because no answer at all, only just technical problem and they will do all the things, fix it up until five hours and we still have the same answer.”

The wheel started turning again more than six hours later and passengers were ushered into ambulances, a witness said.

[Steven Yeo, Singapore Flyer General Manager]
“This is the first time that we”ve ever had a situation of this nature where people were hospitalised. In the earlier incidences, we were able to restore power within one hour.”

Standing at a height of 165 meters, the Flyer started turning in the city state in February. It is 30 metres higher than the London Eye Ferris wheel.

The Flyer has 28 bus-sized capsules attached to a circular frame 150 metres in diameter. Each capsule can accommodate 28 people.

It is part of Singapore’s drive to boost tourism revenues.
